Switchboard Connect #001

How to learn process design and Google & Microsoft implement more AI into tools you already use.

We’re here to help you stay ahead without the noise.

Every other week, I curate and share 5 big pieces of AI & Automation content for SMB's that you shouldn't miss.

Let’s get into it.

The Big 5

1. OpenAI, now with eyes!

OpenAI dropped GPT-4 Turbo with Vision which enables creating AI applications & Chatbots that not only understand text but can see and interpret images including a long standing, common challenge: images in PDFs.

2 quick examples of what this unlocks:

  • Customer Support: Snap and send a photo of a product issue, and let AI instantly guide the fix or escalate it smartly.

  • Document Automation: Photograph documents to have AI sort, file, and process them.

Plus: Enjoy larger context windows—imagine fitting 300 pages of text in one go! And the AI outputs are now friendlier, less wordy way.

Being able to go multimodal where information from images can be used in AI applications is going to level things up, fast.

The new model is in their API (for developers and automator’s like us to use) and soon coming to ChatGPT.

2. Ways to use AI at Work: Part 712

Everyone's looking for ways to use AI at work and the WSJ just dropped some top-tier tips.

Normally, WSJ keeps their goodies behind a paywall, but we've got the hookup for you with a share link from our subscription.

Microsoft Co-Pilot and Google Gemini are making it easy to securely interact with AI on top of all the work data & documents you already use all day.

3. Air Canada Pays for Chatbot Mistakes

While this is an extreme case, Air Canada tried to argue that it shouldn't be liable for anything its chatbot says.

Turns out…they are liable.

This underlines a new risk for businesses to keep in mind: being held accountable for their AI's miscommunications.

4. More (True) AI Automation Integrations

Many conflate AI and Automation but they're not the same, though they often team up.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Automation focuses on streamlining manual tasks—regardless of AI being involved.

  • AI can add a layer of intelligence, insight, or decision making into the automated process.

Why it matters: SMBs can do more, faster with Google AI Studio (aka, Gemini) now that it’s integrated right into Zapier.

Paige from Google’s DeepMind AI team shows how easy it’s becoming to “sprinkle” AI into your workflows:

5. Master Digital Process Design with Miro

We swear by Miro for our workflow and automation designs. Keen on mastering it?

Whether you’re all about Miro or just diving into virtual whiteboarding, their quick, free crash course is a goldmine for technical diagramming and process design.

Perfect for those ready to level up their skills!

👀 Post of the Week

It doesn’t have to be this way though ;)

📖 Non-Tech Read of the Week

I finally had the chance to try Erewhon when I was in LA late last year and the overpriced smoothie was…fine. But they are a fascinating case study in the power of branding.

Okay, that’s all for now. Chat soon! 👋
